I have been interviewing many candidates for Scrum Master positions...
Either for our projects internally at Scrum Institute or for our clients, we have been helping to build, improve, and scale their Scrum teams.
Recently, I noticed a common treat that differentiates high performer Scrum Masters from mediocre ones.
I actually saw two treats. However, today I am going to mention about only one of these treats.
Mediocre Scrum Masters sell themselves through their own success stories, through their significance in their organizations. That's the quickest and guaranteed way to lose a Scrum Master job!
Whereas high performer Scrum Masters sell themselves through success stories of Scrum teams they're associated with, and accomplished business results of those teams.
To only call only a few of your responsibilities, remember: As a Scrum Master, you're now a trained facilitator to ensure flawless operation of your scrum team. Sometimes you're a master negotiator to protect your scrum team from interruptions and fictive priorities of your stakeholders. Other times you're a master communicator to remove or prevent known or anticipated impediments before these impediments bring your team to a dead-end street.
For such a challenging and multi-dimensional role, in which your success as a Scrum Master can only be measured with the success of your team:
None of the hiring managers on the planet earth cares about you!
What hiring managers care about is what is in it for them after they offer a job to you. Their only concern is whether you're the right professional to make their scrum teams succeed. Without excuses!
The easiest way to prove that you're the right Scrum Master for your hiring manager goes through explaining the success stories of your scrum teams.
You want to convince hiring managers how you subtly made yourself invisible by bringing up and operating your first scrum team that barely needed you in the end. How you then started contributing to other Scrum teams and how well they performed by achieving fantastic business results and increasing profitability of your business.
In your next job interview for a Scrum Master position, if you follow this pattern of communication instead of explaining how knowledgeable, experienced and great you as a Scrum Master are, none of the hiring managers can easily throw away your candidacy for your dream job.
